A fellow member of EWB-Maties recognized that school children finishing matric in Kayamandi (informal settlement on the outskirts or Stellenbosch) were graduating with little to no experience and understanding of computers. He identified that these students were being set up to fail in either the work environment or studying environment that they found themselves post school, due to this lack of skill. A computer literacy course was then created with the idea of teaching high school learners in Kayamandi High the basics of computers. (how to use a mouse, internet, research, basic microsoft etc.) The course framework, lesson plans and material covered was designed and facilitated entirely by our members. (This included all ‘lecturers’ and assistants. )
The 2018 Khayamandi High School Computer Literacy Project thus serves to educate Grd 8 learners on the fundamentals of computer literacy. This year we will be conducting a two months long computer course to Grd 8 Khayamandi High School learners. The learners will be awarded certificates upon successful completion of the course.
As a member of EWB-Maties this gives you an opportunity to positively impact the community by teaching/ planning or coordinating these lessons. We will have two lessons a week with alternating teachers and lesson planners.
