Position Title: Marketing and Communications Manager
Location: Hybrid/Remote (with occasional virtual meetings across time zones)
Reporting to: Executive Director/CEOs of EWB-International, EWB-South Africa, and EWB-East Africa
Working Hours: Full-time, 40 hours per week
Contract Type: 1-year renewable contract (pending funding availability)
Remuneration: Competitive, commensurate with experience and regional benchmarks (R400 000-R500 000)

Purpose of the Role

The Marketing and Communications Manager is responsible for leading external and internal communications across EWB-International, EWB-South Africa, and EWB-East Africa. The role ensures visibility of impact, coordination of messaging, and capacity building within the communications functions of each organisation.

Key Responsibilities

1. Content Creation and Storytelling

  • Research, write, edit, and publish compelling stories on engineering projects, human-interest pieces, and thought leadership.
  • Develop long-form content (articles, blogs, newsletters) and short-form content (social media posts, infographics).
  • Create and coordinate visual content (graphics, photos, videos) using tools like Canva or Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Ensure consistent tone and messaging aligned with each organisation’s brand.

     

2. Digital Platform Management

  • Manage a shared content calendar and publishing schedule across LinkedIn and other selected platforms.
  • Update and maintain website content (news articles, static information, project pages).
  • Lead monthly supporter and internal newsletter campaigns.

     

3. Media Relations and PR

  • Manage the relationship with pro bono media partner Publitek, including scheduling calls, reviewing copy, and facilitating interviews.
  • Draft and distribute press releases and media kits.
  • Monitor media opportunities and coordinate timely response to requests.

     

4. Campaign and Project Communications

  • Support planning and promotion of joint campaigns or initiatives 
  • Coordinate and execute content plans for events and launches.

     

5. Capacity Building

  • Organise quarterly peer sessions for communications volunteers or staff within the EWB network.
  • Design and deliver basic training (e.g., storytelling, social media strategy, Canva use).
  • Maintain an internal guide or toolkit for consistent messaging and branding across EWBs.

     

Qualifications and Experience

  • 5+ years’ experience in digital communications, content creation, or marketing, ideally in a nonprofit or social impact environment.
  • Strong storytelling skills, especially in writing.
  • Working knowledge of digital tools (e.g., Mailchimp, WordPress, Canva).
  • Experience with basic video editing tools is an advantage.
  • Ability to manage multiple stakeholders and projects simultaneously.
  • Qualification in Communications, Journalism, International Development, or related field.

Purpose of the Role

The Network & Community Coordinator will be the primary liaison for community engagement, member support, volunteer onboarding, and inter-organisational communication across EWB-International, EWB-South Africa, and EWB-East Africa.

Key Responsibilities

1. Membership and Chapter Support

  • For EWB International, guide new EWB members through onboarding and the EWB International Membership Compliance Framework.
  • For EWBs East Africa and South Africa, formalise member onboarding systems, champion all  projects related to improving member/volunteer engagement.
  • Serve as the first point of contact for all EWB organisations needing support or guidance from EWB-International.
  • Coordinate member-level data collection and annual reporting processes.

     

2. Community Engagement and Events

  • Plan and facilitate workshops, peer exchanges, and community forums.
  • Maintain communication spaces like Whatsapp Community, mailing lists, and Notion/Airtable directories.
  • Promote cross-organisational collaboration where geographic or thematic overlap exists between EWB-International members.

     

3. Volunteer and Donor Enquiry Management

  • Respond to general enquiries and triage requests to the relevant organisational contact (e.g., project lead, communications, country chapter).
  • Maintain a system to log, track, and respond to enquiries in a timely manner.

     

4. Grant and Funding Administration

  • Support the coordination of grant distribution processes managed by EWB-International or other partners.
  • Track fund recipients, coordinate reporting requirements, and maintain accurate documentation.
  • Liaise with finance or admin personnel as needed.

     

5. Internal Coordination and Systems Support

  • Coordinate with the Communications Lead to ensure alignment on storytelling and outreach opportunities.
  • Maintain internal documentation and ensure systems are up-to-date and accessible to relevant personnel.
  • Help improve processes that make the network more effective and aligned.

     

Qualifications and Experience

  • 3+ years of experience in coordination, network/community building, or nonprofit operations.
  • Experience working with international networks or federated organisations is highly desirable.
    Proficient in virtual work tools (Google Workspace, Slack)
